Bits & Pieces of our
Lives
August 2006
The second week of August he spent the mornings helping at Vacation Bible School, mostly running herd on the outside activities which included getting a float ready for our town's Summerfest. Monday he made a set of music (noise?) makers for the kids including a xylophone. Ed came home soaking wet on Friday. The theme was Noah's Ark so getting drenched was in order! Next weekend he'll be on a fishing campout with a group of men at a lake on the east side of Mt. Hood. These guys have camped together every year for many years. Ed has a great time reconnecting with these guys most who live in Portland. It all started back when our previous neighbor from our Portland years decided it was time for the guys to spend a weekend fishing together. Ed's had a couple of new projects, one a real challenge. Wanda
saw a picture of a Ladahki spindle on a knitter's blog and when she asked about
it the blogger sent a large picture of the monk spinning which her husband had
taken when they'd visited Ladahk some years ago. It is similiar to a Turkish
Spindle but longer and cruder. Still, for a spindle to work well it has to spin
evenly and this proved rather elusive on this type of spindle. Ed finally was
able to get a decent balance and spin. Wanda has been playing around with it.
Definitely not as smooth as the Turkish but there is something about it that's
mesmerizing and satisfying. The other came about when a customer ordered a
double-ended circular hook. It's good to have new things to challenge Ed from
time to time. Summer has been a bit slower and he's had a bit of time to
experiment within the line of products we have. Wanda had a week of jury duty in early July followed by a week
of representing the Scotts Mills Friends at the Northwest Friends Yearly
Meeting, which is the annual conference. Long days but good ones, especially the
yearly meeting. The drive to Newberg was a pleasure with many fields of flowers
raised for the seed industry.
